Quthing Woman Appears in Court on Human Trafficking Charge

A 54-year-old woman, Matseliso Sakaria of Quthing, appeared before the Quthing Magistrate’s Court on the 15th, charged with human trafficking. She has been remanded in custody at a correctional facility pending trial.

According to police, on 28 August 2025, Sakaria travelled with a 74-year-old grandmother to Klerksdorp, allegedly crossing the border through a river. She reportedly promised the elderly woman employment in South Africa as a child minder, with a monthly salary of R4,000.

Upon arrival, the two went to a shack occupied by several people of a similar age to the grandmother. Concerned, the elderly woman questioned Sakaria about the situation but was told they were still on their way to the promised job.

They later proceeded to a business area where they met a man who instructed them to return to where they had come from. At that point, Sakaria allegedly disappeared, leaving the grandmother behind. The man later approached the elderly woman and sexually assaulted her.

Police have since appealed to members of the public to thoroughly verify job offers before accepting them, warning that failure to do so may expose individuals to exploitation and abuse.
