Petroleum Fund, IDM roll out safety training for fuel attendants

IN a move aimed at minimising risks and improving safety at filling stations, the Petroleum Fund, in partnership with the Institute of Development Management (IDM), has introduced a petroleum products usage safety programme for fuel attendants across the country.

The initiative was unveiled following the signing of a two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions, under which the Petroleum Fund will sponsor the first cohort of trainees, expected to comprise about 90 fuel attendants.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Petroleum Fund Interim Chief Executive Officer, Advocate Makananelo Kome, said the programme was introduced to address safety concerns associated with the handling of petroleum products.

She explained that although the Petroleum Fund had previously conducted random training sessions for petrol attendants at various filling stations, they identified a critical gap, as Lesotho does not have a local institution offering specialised petroleum handling training.

Adv Kome said the MoU will run for two years, with the possibility of renewal, and will initially cater for one fuel attendant from each of the country’s 90 filling stations.

In his part, IDM acting country director Thibeli Molapo said the institution will offer short courses structured into three phases: introductory, intermediate and advanced.

Meanwhile, during the same media briefing, the Petroleum Fund announced that it has donated jerry cans to all filling stations in the country to discourage the use of plastic containers for carrying fuel.
