Opposition parties in Parliament have voiced concern over the budget estimates scheduled to be presented in the National Assembly next Wednesday by the Minister of Finance and Development Planning.
Leading the criticism is Professor Nqosa Mahao, leader of the Basotho Action Party (BAP), who argues that it is premature to table a new budget without first providing a comprehensive account of how previously allocated funds were spent.
In an interview, Professor Mahao said several critical issues remain unresolved, particularly regarding the management and expenditure of public funds.
He further alleged that some funds may have been diverted from their original purposes, including expenditures on trips that were not budgeted for. Professor Mahao also questioned whether the forthcoming budget would adequately address the challenges the government has itself acknowledged — notably the urgent need to create employment opportunities for young people.
The opposition insists that transparency and accountability must come first, maintaining that Parliament should receive a clear and detailed financial report before considering approval of a new national budget.
