The leader of the Democratic Congress, and leader of opposition, Mathibeli Mokhothu, has sharply criticized the government’s recent announcement of a fuel subsidy, describing it as a mere token gesture that fails to address the real burden faced by ordinary citizens.
Speaking to the press, Mokhothu stated, that the subsidy announced by the government does not mean anything significant, pointing out that the heavy prices that come with fuel hikes will still be paid by the public, which is unacceptable.
He emphasized that the government’s efforts to cushion the impact of rising fuel costs are inadequate, and that the public continues to bear the brunt of inflation driven by global fuel price fluctuations.
Mr. Mokhothu also criticized the government’s prior spending decisions, highlighting that funds allocated for ministers’ international trips—funds he claims did not add value—could have been redirected to support the nation during these challenging times.
