The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has announced that it is investigating nine suppliers of sanitary pads used monthly by millions of women and girls across South Africa.
The announcement follows a recent study by the University of the Free State, which found that certain sanitary pads and panty liners may contain harmful endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). These chemicals have been linked to serious health conditions, including hormonal imbalances, infertility, endometriosis, and cancer.
NCC Acting Commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu said the investigation will be prioritised.
He added that the suppliers involved will be given an opportunity to respond to the concerns before a final determination is made.
