The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Honourable Lejone Mpotjoane, has warned that the ongoing war in the Middle East, which began on the 28th of last month, will have serious negative repercussions across the globe.
Mpotjoane stated that the conflict has already spread to several countries in the Middle East, including Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
According to Mpotjoane, the attacks have been described by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, as measures intended to prevent Iran from enriching uranium that could be used to produce high-grade nuclear weapons, and to remove Iran’s ruling leadership. In the course of these attacks, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, along with other key Iranian leaders, has reportedly been killed.
He stated that among the serious consequences likely to arise from the conflict is a sharp rise in fuel prices, which could in turn lead to increased food costs. This, he warned, would place an even heavier burden on households that are already struggling financially.Mpotjoane added that the Government of Lesotho is calling on all parties involved in the conflict to immediately cease hostilities and return to peace negotiations. He further appealed to all nations to respect the Charter of the United Nations
