MISA CHAIRPERSON WARNS OF DECLINING MEDIA INFLUENCE

The Chairperson of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Lesotho Chapter, Kananelo Boloetse, says the impact of media reporting in the country is declining.

Mr Boloetse said media reports, particularly on corruption, no longer prompt investigations or public action as they once did.

He attributed this to perceived political alignment by some media houses and journalists, which he says has weakened public trust.

Mr Boloetse noted that politicians often exploit the media to advance their own agendas, making it easier for corruption suspects to dismiss reports as smear campaigns.

He said the public has grown disillusioned as individuals accused of corruption continue to avoid accountability.

Mr Boloetse also raised concern over the growing influence of social media, saying mainstream media now follows online trends instead of setting the agenda.

He urged media practitioners to uphold professionalism, maintain independence and rebuild credibility to restore public confidence
