Matlanyane hails World Bank

MINISTER of Finance and Development Planning Dr. Retšelisitsoe Matlanyane has hailed the World Bank Group for its immense contribution to Lesotho’s development programmes.

Dr Matlanyane made the remarks during the World Bank Group Day, held at Avani Maseru. The event highlighted the long standing partnership and joint efforts to improve lives in Lesotho, while also raising awareness about the Bank’s role in reducing poverty and promoting inclusive, sustainable growth for all Basotho.

Delivering her keynote address, Dr Matlanyane said the commemoration was an opportunity to reflect on a collaboration that has long underpinned the country’s national development strategy. She praised the Bank’s role in providing technical expertise, innovative financing and global perspectives.

However, Dr Matlanyane said challenges such as climate volatility and global inflationary pressures demand an even stronger partnership.

Also speaking at the event, the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Amanda Mukwashi, said partnership between Lesotho and the UN which is anchored by the UN Lesotho Cooperation Framework, to which the World Bank Group is a signatory, is essential.

She stressed that development must ultimately be measured by outcomes that affect people’s lives. These include employment opportunities for youth, access to social protection, resilient infrastructure, gender equality and climate resilience.

The World Bank’s mission is to end extreme poverty and boost shared prosperity on a liveable planet.
