Mabote Beavers Rugby Club in Ha Mabote, Berea, hosted several rugby teams at its grounds over the weekend for a memorial tournament.
Club administrator and rugby pioneer Lits’itso Mots’eremeli said the tournament, now held for five consecutive years, honours five young female players who died in a car accident in 2019 while travelling to a tournament in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
Mokoallong High School rugby player Tebello Lechesa said the accident deeply affected her, but her love for rugby helped her overcome the grief and continue playing. She said winning the Best Player award at the 2024 tournament further motivated her to pursue the sport.
