Lumpy skin disease reported in Lesotho

The Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, Mr Thabo Mofosi, has warned the nation about an outbreak of lumpy skin disease reported in parts of Leribe, Maseru, Botha-Bothe, Mafeteng and Quthing districts.

In a statement, Mr Mofosi said the disease mainly affects cattle and water buffaloes. He explained that it is a viral disease spread primarily by mosquitoes from one infected animal to another, as well as through direct contact, although the risk of transmission through contact is relatively low. He noted that hot and moist conditions during this time of the year encourage mosquito breeding, increasing the spread of diseases. Symptoms of lumpy skin disease include skin lumps, excessive salivation, fever and swelling, among others.

The Minister said there is no specific cure for the disease because it is viral, but affected animals can be treated with medication that helps boost their immune systems.

He urged farmers to immediately isolate infected cattle, keep them in shaded areas, ensure they have adequate food and water, and avoid using them for any form of work.

Meanwhile, Mr Mofosi said the Ministry is continuing efforts to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease, which was previously reported in South Africa. As a precautionary measure, the importation of livestock and unprocessed meat from South Africa has been banned.
