The Commissioner of the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS), Advocate Borotho Matsoso, says the police service is actively supporting the promotion of condom use as a key measure to protect Basotho, particularly young people from HIV infection, other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and unplanned pregnancies.
In his message marking the day, Advocate Matsosoappealed to Basotho to use condoms whenever necessary in order to live long and healthy lives. He stressed that personal safety and well-being are a shared responsibility, adding that everyone has a role to play in protecting themselves and others.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Honourable Ts’epang Ts’ita Mosena, who is also a Health Champion at the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), said community leaders have a duty to ensure the safety and well-being of Basotho. She emphasized that leaders must lead by example by engaging directly with communities and guiding them towards healthier lifestyles.
Honourable Ts’ita Mosena said efforts to reduce HIV and AIDS infections must be strengthened, noting that while the country is making progress, more still needs to be done. She also encouraged the prevention of unplanned pregnancies through condom use, stressing that using a condom does not signify a lack of love or trust between partners. Instead, she said, it demonstrates self-care, responsibility, and consideration for one’s partner.
International Condom Day is observed annually on 13 February. This year’s theme is “Just Use It.”
