Lesotho Urged to Intensify Fight Against Tuberculosis Amid Persistent High Burden

The Chair of Chairs in the National Assembly, Mokhothu Makhalanyane highlighted the country’s ongoing vulnerability to the TB epidemic as the international community observes World TB Day. Mr. Makhalanyane said despite global advancements, Lesotho continues to face one of the world’s highest TB burdens.

Mr. Makhalanyane’s address in parliament today focused on several critical areas for national reform, being Infrastructure and Infection Control, Strengthening the Fight against the disease, and Public Awareness.

He urged the government to build infrastructure specifically designed to prevent the easy spread of infections, indicating this aligns with his broader calls for strategic health sector planning to ensure long-term service delivery.

He emphasized that while TB is a communicable disease, it is also preventable and curable. He called for intensified government action to eliminate the disease, stating that Lesotho has the potential to become TB-free like many overseas nations.

He underscored that World TB Day is a vital tool for building public awareness and redressing the state of the epidemic to improve overall quality of health. He added that men remain the most vulnerable as they are reluctant to go to health facilities.
