admin Lesotho has secured an insurance payout of US$2.7 million to support disaster risk response.
This was revealed by the Director of Emergency Response at the Disaster Management Authority (DMA), Rets’elisitsoe Molefe, during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Hlotse, Leribe, yesterday.
Mr Molefe said the meeting focused on the country’s preparedness for priority hazards, with drought identified as the most pressing threat. He explained that Lesotho is using a drought index model to monitor and respond to drought conditions and that efforts are underway to customize the model to better suit the country’s needs.
He said the DMA is working with representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Bureau of Statistics, the Range Management Division and other stakeholders to develop profiling systems and strengthen continuous planning for disaster risk management.
Mr Molefe added that these efforts are particularly important as Lesotho has been warned of the possible effects of the El Niño weather phenomenon.
