Lesotho Pressed to Reform Aviation Sector by ICAO
Written by Mohale FM on October 3, 2025
The Minister of Public Works and Transport, Mr. Matjato Moteane, says the
International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has urged Lesotho to introduce new
legislation and strengthen infrastructure to meet international aviation standards.
Moteane, who recently returned from ICAO’s annual meeting in Montreal, Canada,
told Mohale FM that for Lesotho to achieve a higher rating in ICAO audits, the
government must take full control of infrastructure around airport areas and
update outdated aviation laws. He explained that the new framework should give
the responsible minister complete authority over aviation policy.
He added that ICAO recommended Lesotho take lessons from neighboring South
Africa, which has modernized its aviation infrastructure to enhance efficiency.
Meanwhile, the minister further noted that Lesotho is also required to establish an
independent Aviation Authority, free from government interference, to ensure
compliance with ICAO standards.
Lesotho has until September 2026 to fulfill these requirements.
