Deputy Prime Minister Justice Nthomeng Majara has called for practical and inclusive global rules on Artificial Intelligence (AI), saying developing countries should not be left behind as AI technology continues to grow.
Speaking at the first United Nations Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance in Geneva, Switzerland, Majara said Lesotho supports efforts to ensure that AI benefits all countries and all people.
She said Lesotho’s priorities are to build skills and capacity, promote open-source technology and open data, strengthen digital infrastructure, and ensure that AI is used responsibly with human oversight and accountability.
Majara also proposed a framework to help African countries organize and improve public data so it can be used safely and effectively for AI.
She concluded by calling for global AI governance that is practical, inclusive and focused on sustainable development, with an emphasis on trusted data, capacity-building, openness and human oversight.
