Lepereng Dam, located between Mathokoane and Borokhoaneng, continues to serve as both a vital resource and a source of concern for surrounding communities.
While the dam provides much-needed water and supports local livelihoods, residents say it also poses serious safety risks, particularly during the rainy season.
Mrs. ’Mathabo Letsapo, a resident of Matholoana who lives near the dam, expressed concern about the safety of the structure. She said rising water levels during heavy rains threaten nearby homes and create dangerous conditions.
She recalled an incident on 11 February 2026 when an eight-year-old Grade 3 learner from Thamae LEC Primary School was swept away by floodwaters flowing from the full dam onto the road leading to the school. Fortunately, elderly men who were nearby managed to rescue the child.
Mrs. Letsapo said community members are pleading with the government to construct additional drainage tunnels to allow excess water to be released safely and prevent flooding.
Mr. Kopano Leshota from Borokhoaneng echoed similar sentiments. While acknowledging the dam’s importance, he highlighted its many benefits to the community, including irrigation, fishing opportunities, and support for brickmaking activities.
However, he raised concerns about the dam overflowing during heavy rains, which damages crops in nearby fields and negatively affects farmers.
Despite these challenges, residents agree that Lepereng Dam remains essential to local livelihoods. They are calling on the government to implement measures that will address safety concerns and ensure the dam continues to benefit, rather than endanger, the community.
