Mohale FM The Lesotho National Farmers Union (LENAFU) has called on the government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, to urgently convene a national stakeholders’ forum bringing together seed producers and suppliers, agricultural scientists, and other key players in the sector to assess and interpret the anticipated drought and extreme heat conditions forecast by the Lesotho Meteorological Services.
Speaking to Mohale FM, LENAFU President Mr. Khotso Lepheana said the Ministry of Agriculture should move swiftly to provide farmers with clear guidance on the likely impact of the expected El Niño-induced heat and drought on crops and livestock, as well as practical recommendations to help mitigate potential losses in agricultural production.
According to the Lesotho Meteorological Services, forecasts indicate that the upcoming summer season is likely to be characterized by drought and above-normal temperatures.
