LDF intensifies probe into missing guns

THE Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) has launched internal investigations into the alleged theft of its firearms by soldiers accused of selling them to famo gangsters.

One of three soldiers charged with the theft of firearms, Corporal Letseka Tšitso, was rearrested by the Military Police shortly after being released on bail by the Maseru Magistrates Court on Thursday. Tšitso was charged a fortnight ago alongside Corporals Mosuoe Letšoana and Lerato Sechoala.

According to the charge sheet, the trio allegedly stole five Galil rifles, four rifles, one 9mm P-line automatic pistol and two 7.65mm pistols from Makoanyane Barracks in November 2025, acting in furtherance of a common purpose.

While Letšoana and Sechoala have not yet applied for bail, Tšitso’s lawyer, Advocate Letuka Molati, successfully petitioned Magistrate Puseletso McPherson to release him. Magistrate McPherson granted bail of M1 000 with a surety of M20 000, on condition that Tšitso attends all remands, refrains from interfering with crown witnesses and police investigations, and stands trial to finality.

However, his freedom lasted only a few minutes. He was immediately rearrested by the Military Police as he exited the Lesotho Correctional Service gate, where he had been in remand custody.

LDF spokesperson, Colonel Sakeng Lekola confirmed that Titso was in military custody anew.

The Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) spokesperson, Superintendent Thabo Mohai, declined to comment.
