KwaZulu-Natal recorded a sharp rise in tourist arrivals in July, strengthening expectations for the province’s spring and summer travel season.
Statistics South Africa data cited by the KZN Tourism and Film Authority shows about 33,500 visitors entered the province during July, up roughly 29% from nearly 26,000 in the same month last year.
Arrivals through the Golela border post with Eswatini rose by almost 33%, while Kosi Bay on the Mozambique border recorded growth of about 42%. Nationally, international arrivals increased by around 12.5% to just under one million.
Tourism officials say the next challenge is converting the stronger visitor numbers into longer stays, more restaurant and attraction spending and increased business for local operators, including destinations beyond the coast such as the Midlands and Drakensberg.
