The Chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Rev. Dr John Maphephe, accompanied by Commissioner Mrs Pontšo ‘Mamatlere Matete, paid a courtesy call on the Honourable Minister of Local Government and Chieftainship as part of the Commission’s ongoing stakeholder engagement and collaboration initiatives.
The meeting provided an opportunity to strengthen the partnership between the Ministry and the IEC, with discussions focusing on the harmonization of the National Assembly Elections and Local Government Elections.
The proposed reform seeks to enable both elections to be conducted simultaneously, with the aim of improving operational efficiency, enhancing electoral management, reducing election fatique to the electorate, and reducing costs to taxpayers.
Among the immediate priorities is the re-establishment of a Joint Technical Team, which will be tasked with developing a comprehensive roadmap and implementation framework to guide the harmonization process.
It is reported that the engagement was productive and resulted in agreement on several key areas of collaboration.
