Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar says his government will change rules introduced under former prime minister Viktor Orban that effectively prevented gay and lesbian couples from adopting children.
Reuters reports that the 2020 system required single applicants to obtain approval from the family affairs minister, creating an effective barrier for same-sex couples. Magyar said adoption decisions should instead be made by qualified professionals based on the welfare of the child.
The planned change would mark a significant shift in Hungary’s approach to LGBTQ rights after years of restrictive legislation under the previous government.
