The Houthi movement’s latest territorial gains along Yemen’s Red Sea coastline are increasing pressure on Gulf states and adding a new layer of risk around two of the world’s most important energy and shipping corridors.
Reuters reports that the Iran-aligned group has strengthened its position near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, creating a second strategic pressure point alongside the Strait of Hormuz.
The development is particularly significant for Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states because oil and commercial shipping routes through the Red Sea have become increasingly important as tensions affect traffic elsewhere in the region.
Foreign ministers from Gulf states are expected to discuss maritime security and the Hormuz situation with Iran in Oman, as governments weigh the costs of confrontation against renewed diplomacy.
