Health Ministry Reviews Study on Hormone-Disrupting Chemicals in Sanitary Pads

The Ministry of Health in Lesotho says it is reviewing findings from a recent study that detected endocrine, or hormone-disrupting, chemicals in certain sanitary pads sold in the region.

In a statement, the Ministry, through the Lesotho Medicines Regulatory Authority (LeMeRA) confirmed it is aware of research published by the University of the Free State in South Africa. The study reportedly identified the presence of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in sanitary pads tested in that country.

Officials say the findings may also be relevant to Lesotho, as similar products could be available on the local market.

LeMeRA has since launched its own internal review and investigation to assess the potential implications for public health. However, authorities stress that the review process is still ongoing and no final regulatory decisions have been made.

The regulatory body is also engaging with the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority to gather further information and ensure that any action taken is guided by verified scientific and regulatory evidence.

The Ministry has assured the public that updates will be provided once the assessment is complete.
