The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Business Development held a one-day media sensitisation workshop in Maseru to introduce the soon-to-be-established Lesotho Standards Institution.
Minister Trade, Industry and Business Development, Mokhethi Shelile, highlighted the crucial role of journalists in bridging the information gap between government and the public, stressing that accurate reporting ensures citizens are informed about developments affecting their livelihoods.
The workshop aimed to raise awareness about the institution, which will provide a framework for national standards, helping local producers and manufacturers meet market requirements. Qenehelo Lenka from the Ministry’s Department of Quality, Metrology and Technical Regulations said the facility will protect consumers and enable Basotho products to access regional and international markets, particularly within the Southern African Development Community.
The Ministry’s Director of Standards, Molebatsi Rabolinyane, revealed that construction at Ha Tikoe Industrial Area is underway, with the two-storey facility expected to be completed by May 2026. The laboratories will cater to food safety, pharmaceuticals, construction, and the revival of the wool and mohair industry.
Journalists were urged to deepen their knowledge of standards, metrology, accreditation, and conformity assessment to report more effectively on trade and industry matters.
The facility, a 1000m² property, is estimated to cost M260 million, funded by the government, with M90 million allocated for the 2025/26 financial year.
