German companies increased investment in China by about one-third in the first half of 2026 while cutting investment in the United States, according to analysis by the German Economic Institute.
The study found German firms invested €5.6 billion more in China than during the same period a year earlier, while investment in the US fell by nearly two-thirds to around €4.3 billion.
Researchers linked the shift to the importance of China as a sales and production market, while trade tensions and US tariffs weighed on investment decisions in America.
