Protests have broken out in several Syrian cities after the government raised fuel prices, adding pressure to households already dealing with high living costs and a fragile economy.
Diesel prices increased by as much as 40 percent while petrol rose by about 28 percent. Demonstrations were reported in Hama, Khan Sheikhoun and Maarat al-Numan. Authorities said the increases reflected higher international fuel costs and maintenance at the Baniyas refinery.
Syria remains heavily dependent on fuel imports because domestic production falls well short of national demand, making global price movements particularly sensitive for consumers and businesses.
