A former employee of Lesotho Postal Services has been sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment or the payment of an M80,000 fine after being found guilty of corruption, fraud, cheating public revenue and aggravated theft.
The accused, Teboho Mosese, who was employed in the Salary Advance Division, was convicted on all four charges before Magistrate Nthabiseng Moopisa-Motilane.
The court heard that between May 2017 and November 2018, Mosese unlawfully received money from the Postmaster General’s Salary Advance Division into his personal bank account, despite never applying for a salary advance loan.
Evidence presented during the trial showed that Mosese duplicated clients’ salary advance loan applications and fraudulently redirected the loan proceeds into his own bank account. The court heard that he carried out 26 fraudulent transactions amounting to M123,326.87.
The court also heard that Mosese received cash payments from two clients who had visited the office to repay their salary advance loans. However, the money, amounting to M25,300.00, was never deposited into the Postmaster General’s account.
In total, the offences involved M148,626.87.
Following his conviction on all four counts, the court sentenced Mosese to eight years’ imprisonment or the payment of an M80,000 fine.
