Former IEC Spokesperson Explains Circumstances Surrounding Director’s Resignation

Former spokesperson of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Ms. Marafaele Mohloboli, has clarified issues surrounding the resignation of the IEC Director of Elections, Mr. Mphaiphele Maqutu.

Ms. Mohloboli said that conflicts arose in the course of work and that Mr. Maqutu had expected that if he made any mistakes, he would be called aside for discussion. She explained that he was instead surprised when he was summoned to a meeting together with officers under his supervision, during which they were reprimanded collectively.

According to Ms. Mohloboli, Mr. Maqutu expressed dissatisfaction with how he was treated during the meeting, which took place on Monday.

Ms. Mohloboli further stated that during the same meeting, a decision was taken that all employees working on short-term contracts should leave work, while those who had been suspended for various reasons were instructed to return to duty.

She also confirmed that her own employment with the IEC has come to an end and that she has since left the workplace.

Ms. Mohloboli concluded by stating that the institution is currently facing significant political interference and pressure.
