Eswatini is mourning Chief Justice Bheki Maphalala, the country’s first liSwati to hold the office, who died in a South African hospital after a short illness.
Maphalala joined the High Court bench in 2009, became a Supreme Court judge in 2011 and was appointed Chief Justice in 2015. He went on to serve for almost 11 years, making him one of the longest-serving heads of the country’s judiciary.
His death brings to a close a significant chapter in Eswatini’s judicial leadership.
