The Ministry of Education and Training, through its Department of Technical and Vocational Skills, on Monday conducted competency-based trade tests for Basotho who acquired skills through work experience. The examinations were held at Lerotholi Polytechnic in Fokothi.
Speaking to Mohale FM, the Director of Technical Services and Training in the department, Mr Tumelo ‘Mota, said the initiative is aimed at recognizing and supporting Basotho who did not have the opportunity to attend school or complete their studies, but instead gained skills through hands-on experience.
Mr ‘Mota explained that the trade tests will enable such individuals to obtain formal certification, allowing them to earn better wages that reflect their level of skill and competence.
He added that the certificates will also open up employment opportunities across all SADC countries and noted that the skills being assessed include those acquired by Basotho who previously worked in the mines, where they learned various trades, as well as individuals who have worked on contracts for at least two years performing similar work.
Mr ‘Mota said there are about 11 skill categories being assessed, including brick and stone construction, shuttering, steel fixing, plumbing, carpentry, furniture making, welding and plastering.
