The Democratic Congress Youth League has expressed concern over the manner in which individuals are being recruited for the national census campaign, including the enumeration of Basotho living in South Africa.
In an interview with Mohale FM, the Youth League President, Phehello Sehlabaka, stated that this is the first time they have observed what appears to be a politicised recruitment process for census work.
He explained that the expectation is for census personnel to be individuals who can be trusted to deliver accurate data and ensure a proper count of the population. However, he raised concerns that this standard may be compromised, alleging that some recruits may have been selected through political influence.
He further revealed that the Youth League has submitted a formal letter to the Minister of Finance, Retselisitsoe Matlanyane, requesting an investigation into the recruitment process. The letter also calls for the publication of a list of all individuals hired through the Public Service to conduct the census.
