The deadline set by the anti-immigration group March and March for undocumented foreigners to leave South Africa falls this Wednesday, with protesters promising to resume action.
The deadline comes amid rising concern over job losses, with Statistics South Africa reporting that 123-thousand formal jobs have been lost since January. The unemployment rate stands at 33.6 percent, with factories and construction among the hardest-hit sectors.
Many protesters blame foreigners for the shortage of jobs, but South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has rejected the claim that migrants are responsible for South Africa’s job and economic challenges.
