DC Youth League Calls for Expansion of NMDS Scholarships

The President of the Democratic Congress Youth League, Mr Phehello Sehlabaka, has called on the National Manpower Development Secretariat (NMDS) to increase the number of young people who benefit from government scholarships.

Speaking in an interview with Mohale FM, Sehlabaka said access to education plays a critical role in steering young people away from negative behaviours such as drug abuse and involvement in criminal activities.

He also raised concern over the challenge faced by many Basotho graduates who, after completing their studies, struggle to find employment due to lack of work experience, which is often required by employers.

Sehlabaka further criticised the government for failing to adequately involve skilled Basotho in addressing national challenges. He cited the ongoing outbreak of lumpy skin disease affecting cattle, noting that there are Basotho who have studied related fields and possess the necessary expertise, yet are not consulted or engaged by the authorities.

He stressed that involving qualified citizens in national matters would not only address existing problems more effectively, but also create opportunities for skilled Basotho to contribute meaningfully to the country’s development.
