A 41-year-old Malawian national, Kenneth Motenje, and his 35-year-old girlfriend, Nomthandazo Daemane of K’hokhobe, appeared before the Quthing Magistrate’s Court on 13 July this year, charged with attempting to fraudulently obtain a national identity card.
Police spokesperson, Senior Superintendent Thabo Mohai, said Nomthandazo approached her village chief and requested a letter, claiming it was for her brother to obtain identity documents.
He said the chief issued the letter in the name of the alleged brother and on 8 July, Kenneth used it to obtain a birth certificate as if he were a Mosotho citizen.
Senior Superintendent Mohai further said police investigations revealed that the pair allegedly paid M800 to officials to facilitate the issuing of the birth certificate.
The court denied bail to Kenneth and his girlfriend, and they remain in custody pending trial.
They are expected to appear in court again on 27 July this year.
