South Africa’s largest trade union federation, COSATU, is opening its 15th National Congress in Midrand, Johannesburg, with about 1,800 delegates from 16 affiliates expected to attend.
The gathering comes as workers face persistent pressure from the cost of living, unemployment and a slow economy. COSATU spokesperson Zanele Sabela said delegates will assess the state of the federation and its affiliates, as well as the conditions facing workers, including the growing number of people employed through gig and platform-based work.
The congress will also elect the federation’s leadership and set priorities for the next term.
