One of the street vendors who chose to work on Christmas Day, Mr. Mikaele Molao, says the day offers significant opportunities for his business since many traders do not report for duty. He explained that the reduced number of vendors allows him to attract more customers, which in turn results in higher earnings compared to his colleagues who stayed away.
Mr. Molao said that being at work and serving customers on Christmas Day forms part of how he celebrates the festive season. He noted that with unemployment levels remaining high in the country, it is important for people to remain motivated and find practical ways to support their families and earn a living.
The Matsieng-based vendor added that on ordinary working days he usually arrives at his workstation at around 06:00am, but on Christmas Day he reported at 08:00am. By the time of the interview, around 09:00am, he had already made several sales.
He further described Christmas as a time for sharing happiness, love, and support, and took the opportunity to thank his customers for their loyalty and support throughout the year.
