The Central Bank of Lesotho (CBL) launched an upgraded maloti banknotes in Maseru on Tuesday.
The Governor of the bank, Dr. Maluke Letete, said one of the reasons for upgrading the banknotes is to strengthen their security features and to try to include people with visual impairments. He said the money is now made with improved paper, which will extend its lifespan and help prevent the spread of germs through cash. He says its features ensure that everyone has the right to access money.
Meanwhile, Ms. Makutloano Setai from the same bank said the research conducted on the new banknotes confirms that they are of long-lasting quality, adding that they have been tested in all ways to reduce the chances of counterfeiting.
The upgraded banknotes include the M10, M20, M50, M100, and M200 denominations. Dr. Letete appealed to everyone to continue accepting all existing banknotes until the bank announces when any of them will cease to be legal tender. He said it is an offense to refuse any kind of money while it is still legally recognized.
