The Central Bank of Lesotho (CBL) and National University of Lesotho (NUL) have enhanced efforts to curb the high levels of over indebtedness among salaried employees. Speaking at the launch of the Personal Finance Management Programme, at Lehakoe Cultural and Recreation Centre on Tuesday, CBL Governor, Dr Maluke Letete hailed the historic partnership as a critical milestone for national financial resilience. ..
Dr Letete said the Certificate Programme in Personal Finance Management came at the back of efforts to combat high levels of over indebtedness and hence financial literacy. Dr Letete stated that in 2022, they launched the programme to scale up financial education among the salaried employees. He noted that this covered government employees, teachers, health care practitioners and security sector employees.
Dr Letete admitted that while some progress was achieved in this countrywide campaign huge gaps still exist. He said at the centre of this high indebtedness is low levels of financial literacy, together with personal attitudes and behaviors’ towards money management, hence the Bank initiated the progress to develop the certificate programme such that people can be empowered.
