Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is exploring whether Canada could build a much closer formal relationship with the European Union through a possible new form of associate membership.
Reuters, citing a Wall Street Journal report, said the idea would involve a status that does not currently exist in the bloc. Unnamed Canadian and EU officials were reported to be discussing ways to deepen economic, strategic and technological links.
Canada has been seeking to diversify its trade and diplomatic relationships amid strains with the United States. The proposal could potentially cover closer cooperation in sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence and infrastructure.
Canada’s embassy in Brussels and the European Commission did not immediately comment on the report.
