Mohale FM Four police officers, Detective Sergeant Tsebiso Sebehela, Detective Tšeliso Rammoana, Constable Khosi Matsoso, and Constable Mokhethi Monyane, have been acquitted of charges related to the 2019 death of detainee Sempe Molapo in the Qholaqhoe area of Butha-Buthe.
According to Advocate Lephuthing, the officers had been accused of assaulting Molapo, allegedly resulting in his death while in custody.
Adv. Lephuthing further alleged that former Police Commissioner Holomo Molibeli protected officers implicated in the case in an effort to shield individuals he favoured. He said that despite the establishment of a team of detectives to investigate the matter, the inquiry uncovered several irregularities.
Among the concerns raised were the alleged disappearance of evidence provided by some witnesses and the intentional alteration of other evidence during the course of the investigation.
The acquittal follows years of legal proceedings surrounding the high-profile case.
