Botswana has secured the release of Lesedi Molapisi, a citizen who had been sentenced to death in Bangladesh after a drug-trafficking case.
Molapisi was arrested in Dhaka in 2022 after arriving from South Africa and was later sentenced in 2024. Botswana’s government said sustained diplomatic engagement, including an appeal by President Duma Boko, helped secure her release.
Foreign Affairs Minister Phenyo Butale said Botswana’s missions in South Africa and India had worked with Bangladeshi authorities on the case. Molapisi was expected to return home following the decision.
