A Bocheletsane High School learner, Letlisa Maleka, has developed reusable sanitary pads from natural materials in an effort to address period poverty and reduce school absenteeism among girls.
The pads include a protective layer designed to prevent leakages. Maleka’s innovation earned her third place at the recent Spelling A Business Africa (SABA) business pitches.
United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Country Representative John Kennedy Mosoti said locally produced sanitary pads could help reduce the cost of imported menstrual products, improve access and support local manufacturing.
