Basotho Covenant Movement Split as Expelled Members Announce New Political Formation

Basotho Covenant Movement interim spokesperson Sekhonyana Molapo says party leader Ts’epo Lipholo was pressured into expelling him and several other members from the party, a development he says has prompted him to form a new political movement.
Speaking in an interview with Mohale FM on Wednesday, Molapo said the fallout stemmed from differences of opinion, alleging that Dr Lipholo had become vulnerable to what he called poor advice from opportunistic members of his executive committee. He stated that Dr Lipholo informed him of his dismissal from the party via a telephone call on Sunday.

Molapo added that the new movement under formation would continue to pursue the land-reclamation agenda without Dr Lipholo, arguing that their expulsion represented the latest attempt to derail the mission entrusted to them by supporters.

In response, Dr Lipholo earlier downplayed Molapo’s significance within the party, saying he constituted only a minor element of the movement. Dr Lipholo said he continued to work with what he termed “key thinkers” who would drive the organization’s objectives forward.
In a statement to supporters on Sunday, Dr Lipholo confirmed the departure of some members and urged remaining supporters to stay focused on the party’s core mission.
