The leader of the Basotho Action Party (BAP) Professor Nqosa Maho has criticised the ruling party for failing to deliver on promises made to Basotho when it assumed power.
Prof. Mahao stated that job creation was one of the key priorities outlined in the Revolution for Prosperity (RFP) manifesto during the election campaign, but argued that the government has not fulfilled this commitment.
According to the BAP leader, the past four years under the RFP-led government have seen significant job losses, including approximately 1,500 positions lost following the withdrawal of a United States fund. He added that conditions worsened for factory workers as several companies, among them Glory International, C&Y Garments, and Lesotho Precious Garments, were forced to close, resulting in further unemployment.
Prof. Mahao also noted that the Belo factory shells, which were intended to create up to 50,000 jobs, have become underutilised “white elephants.” He estimated that around 20,000 factory workers have lost their jobs since 2022, when the RFP came into power.
In addition, he highlighted that the mining sector has experienced substantial retrenchments, contributing further to job losses. He expressed concern that youth unemployment has risen to over 300,000, despite the strong electoral support that brought the current government into office.
