Voters in the Muslim-majority Bangsamoro region of the Philippines are choosing their first parliament, a major milestone in the territory’s transition toward greater self-government.
About 2.4 million voters are eligible to elect an 80-member legislature under the political settlement that created the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in 2019. Seats are divided among party, district and sectoral representatives.
The vote follows decades of conflict and is intended to strengthen the peace process, although security concerns remain after violence in parts of the region ahead of polling.
