Mohale FM Bafana Bafana head coach, Hugo Broos believes South Africa has a bright future despite the team’s historic FIFA World Cup campaign ending in the Round of 32.
South Africa suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Canada in Los Angeles on Sunday night after Stephen Eustáquio scored a stoppage-time winner to send the Canadians into the Round of 16 for the first time.
Although disappointed with the result, Broos praised his players for reaching the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time in the country’s history. He said the tournament had been an important learning experience for his youthful squad and expressed confidence that Bafana Bafana would become regular participants at future World Cups.
The Belgian coach acknowledged that Canada’s physical strength, pace and quality made the difference, adding that South Africa still has lessons to learn when facing teams of that calibre. However, he maintained that the overall campaign was a success and said he remained extremely proud of the character and performances his players displayed throughout the tournament.
Broos also confirmed that he will make a final decision on his future in the coming days after the team returns home.
The 74-year-old has previously indicated that he could step down and retire when his current contract comes to an end.
