AU Preliminary Report Highlights Challenges and Progress in Tanzania Elections

Written by on November 7, 2025

The African Union (AU) has released its preliminary report on the recent elections in Tanzania, providing an overview of the electoral process, observed developments, and areas needing attention.

According to the report, the election period in Tanzania experienced notable shifts following President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s assumption of office in 2021, after the passing of President John Pombe Magufuli. The new administration initially relaxed several restrictions on political activities, including allowing more vibrant political rallies, the return of exiled politicians, and the issuance of licenses to media outlets. These measures temporarily expanded the political space, fostering a more inclusive environment for electoral participation.

However, the report notes that these positive developments were short-lived. The AU observed a decline in the openness of the electoral environment as restrictions re-emerged, impacting the overall transparency and inclusivity of the process.

One of the key concerns highlighted by stakeholders was the late release of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) election calendar. The delayed publication, coupled with a lack of transparency, hindered effective planning and engagement by political parties, observers, and the public. The AU emphasized that an earlier and more inclusive dissemination of electoral information, aligned with regional best practices, would have enhanced the credibility and transparency of the electoral process.

The report also raised concerns about media freedom during the elections. Several media outlets were deregistered or banned across the country, and journalists operated under restrictive reporting guidelines. These measures limited press freedom and restricted the public’s access to diverse information, raising questions about the media’s role in providing balanced coverage of political contestants.

The AU preliminary report calls for steps to address these issues to strengthen the credibility of future elections in Tanzania and underscores the importance of adhering to democratic standards, ensuring media independence, and fostering an electoral environment conducive to genuine political competition.
