Ambassador hails Lesotho’s election to AU Peace and Security Council as a milestone

The Lesotho Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Ntšiuoa Sekete, has commended Lesotho for its election to the African Union Peace and Security Council. Ms Sekete said the position places Lesotho in a stronger role to reaffirm its commitment to peace, stability and security across the continent.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, the Ambassador described the election as both an honour and a significant responsibility bestowed upon the Mountain Kingdom.

She noted that Lesotho accepts the mandate with humility, clarity and a well-defined purpose. She added that the new role will contribute to strengthening resilience, unity and shared responsibility among African states, while promoting dialogue and democratic governance.

Ms Sekete further emphasised that, for Lesotho, peace is not merely the absence of conflict, but also the protection of fundamental rights — particularly for women, young girls, children and other marginalised groups.

The election comes shortly after Lesotho was removed from the Southern African Development Community watch-list, signalling progress in governance and stability.

In a related development, former Prime Minister Moeketsi Majoro has been appointed as a Member of the Panel of Eminent Persons of the African Peer Review Mechanism.

The appointment, endorsed at the African Union level, reflects continued confidence in Lesotho’s contribution to governance, democracy and peer accountability on the continent.
