Accused Say Police Torture Forced Guilty Pleas in Murder Case

Two men accused of killing Jabafu Lenyatsa in Maputsoe on 15 December 2021 have told the court that they pleaded guilty out of fear, alleging they were tortured by police during interrogation.

Testifying before the High Court at Ts’ifa-Li-Mali in Leribe, one of the accused, Sello Nteso—who had previously entered a guilty plea—claimed that police assaulted him and forced him to confess. He told the court that officers beat him with a stick on his waist, buttocks, and under his feet, and suffocated him with a plastic bag until he lost consciousness. Nteso said he ended up confessing to the murder of Jabafu Lenyatsa, a person he said he did not know.

The prosecution alleges that the two accused assaulted and stabbed Jabafu Lenyatsa with a knife, leading to his death.

The case is being heard before Justice ’Makampong Mokhoro and continues today, with the second accused expected to testify regarding the alleged torture he suffered at the hands of the Maputsoe police.
