The Principal of Linots’ing High School in the Leribe district, Mrs. ’Masakoane Mathaba Moloi, says domestic disputes and family conflicts are having a serious impact on learners’ academic performance.
Speaking before Members of Parliament and the District Education Officer during their visit to the school on Wednesday this week, Mrs. Mathaba Moloi said many students who struggle to concentrate in class come from families where parents are constantly fighting.
She added that poverty and destitution affecting many families are also to blame, as parents are often forced to leave their children behind and go to South Africa in search of work.
Meanwhile, a member of parliament, Honourable ’Makatleho Motsoasele assured the principal that her concerns would be forwarded to the relevant authorities. She, however, cautioned that while she could not promise an immediate solution, Parliament would continue its advocacy efforts.
Hon. Motsoasele further emphasized that poverty remains a national challenge, describing it as “a blanket that covers the entire country,” with the southern and central regions being the most affected.
